AVI to VOB Optimization FAQ

How do I re-encode AVI to VOB without quality loss?
+
Upload your AVI file and set Quality to High Quality in the conversion options. That re-encodes the video at the highest quality setting (CRF 18 for H.264 and VP9 output), which keeps the most detail at the cost of a larger file. The default, Balanced, uses the standard setting. The VOB output gets a codec its container supports: H.264 for MP4, MOV and MKV, VP9 for WebM.
It depends on the VOB container. MP4, MOV and MKV output use H.264, which plays on practically every phone, browser and TV. WebM output uses VP9. AVI, WMV and MPEG output use the older codecs those formats were designed for.
Yes — audio is re-muxed when AVI and VOB share an audio codec, or re-encoded to AAC / Opus / Vorbis depending on what the VOB container supports. Multi-track audio (commentary, alternate languages) is preserved in containers that support it (MKV, WebM, MP4).
Yes. The frame rate is kept unless you change it: a 24 fps AVI stays 24 fps in the VOB. The Frame Rate setting can also convert to 60, 30 or 24 fps. It changes the rate only; it does not deinterlace the video or remove 3:2 pulldown.
Same-codec re-muxes (H.264 in both AVI and VOB) produce nearly-identical sizes. Codec changes can swing things dramatically: H.264 -> H.265 typically halves the file at the same visual quality; H.264 -> VP9 is roughly comparable; AV1 is currently the smallest at the cost of slower encode time.
MP4 with H.264 plays on practically every phone, browser and TV. MOV with H.264 plays on Apple devices and most TVs but not on every older Android phone. MKV needs an app such as VLC on iOS, and WebM is at home in browsers. There is no device preset on this page, so choose the target format your device supports.
Depends on the codec change. Same-codec re-mux: 30-60 seconds (no re-encode). Re-encode to a different codec: typically 0.3-0.7x source duration on our GPU pipeline, so a 1-hour AVI -> VOB finishes in 18-40 minutes; AV1 re-encodes are 2-3x slower.
Up to 8K (7680x4320) on Pro. Free is capped at 4K per the file-size limit. HDR metadata (HDR10, Dolby Vision) is preserved where both AVI and VOB containers and codecs support it; SDR sources stay SDR.
Yes. Uploaded AVI files are processed on our own conversion servers, no person reviews them, and they are never shared. The upload and the converted VOB are both deleted automatically about 24 hours after the conversion, which leaves time to download the result. See /privacy/ for the full policy.
Not in the same step — use /video-trim/ or /video-cutter/ to clip the AVI first, then queue the AVI -> VOB conversion. Trim-then-convert is faster than re-encoding the whole file just to crop the output.
Usually the output was compressed harder than the source. Open the conversion options, choose High Quality under Quality, keep Resolution at Original and convert again. There is no CRF or bitrate field on this page; High Quality is the setting that keeps the most detail.
Yes — embedded subtitle tracks (mov_text in MP4, SRT / ASS in MKV, WebVTT in WebM) are preserved when both AVI and VOB containers support them. Burned-in (hardsub) subtitles transfer automatically because they are part of the pixel data.

AVI

AVI files can contain both audio and video data, widely endorsed but with larger file sizes.

VOB

VOB is the container on a video DVD, holding MPEG-2 video, audio, and subtitles, and it may be encrypted.
