What is a MOV file?

Is a MOV file the same thing as an MP4 underneath?

Structurally they are close relatives. MOV is built from the same ISO Base Media File Format box layout MP4 uses — a tree of atoms holding the media data plus an index that says where each frame starts. That is why converting between them is usually a rewrap rather than a re-encode: the streams are copied across untouched and only the wrapper is rewritten, which takes seconds even on a feature-length file. MOV is Apple’s QuickTime container, shipped in 1991 and still the format an iPhone, iPad or Final Cut Pro timeline writes by default.
Why do professional tools hand back MOV?

Because it is built to be worked on rather than distributed. The format keeps quality and structure through repeated opens, edits and re-saves, which is what a production pipeline needs and what a delivery format explicitly trades away. The consequence is size: keep MOV as the master and convert a copy for anyone who only needs to look at it. MOV is the format professional editors ask for, because it survives repeated round-trips through Final Cut Pro, Premiere and DaVinci Resolve without generational loss.
Why will my browser not play a MOV file?

Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and MOV is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. MOV files are large, and outside the Apple ecosystem playback support is patchier than MP4 — older Android builds and some Smart TVs will refuse them.
Will MOV play on a phone or TV without flattening the battery?

Usually yes, because the chips in phones, tablets and televisions decode this kind of payload in dedicated silicon rather than on the main processor. That is the difference between a video that plays cool for two hours and one that heats the device and drains it in forty minutes. Where the format falls down is app support rather than decoding — the codec is fine, the wrapper is what a gallery app may refuse. A MOV normally carries H.264 or HEVC for delivery, or ProRes when it is an editing master, alongside AAC or uncompressed PCM audio.
Are subtitles inside a MOV selectable, or burned into the picture?

Selectable, if they were added properly. MOV carries subtitles as their own stream alongside the video, so the viewer can switch languages, turn them off, or restyle them in a player that supports it. Burned-in subtitles are also possible — they are just pixels in the frame — but they are permanent, and there is rarely a reason to choose them when the container supports the real thing.
Does it matter that MOV is over thirty years old?

Age itself is not the problem — several formats from that era are still perfectly good, precisely because everything has had decades to implement them. What matters is what the era assumed: small files, modest processors, no network, and features nobody needed yet. Where those assumptions still fit, the format is fine. Where they do not, that is the reason to convert.
Can one MOV file hold several audio tracks?

Yes — an original-language mix, a dub and a commentary can all sit in the same file with the player switching between them. Two cautions: many phone and television players expose only the first track however many are present, and a conversion into a format without real multi-track support keeps one track and drops the rest. Pick the track you want before converting, rather than discovering afterwards which one survived.
Do I need a Mac to work with MOV files?

No. The format came out of Apple and is what its devices and software produce by default, but the files themselves are ordinary and read fine elsewhere with the right tool. Converting here happens on the server, so no QuickTime install, no Apple hardware and no platform-specific codec pack is involved anywhere in the process.
Does MOV keep chapter markers?

It does — chapters live in the container metadata, so a long recording can be navigated by section instead of by dragging a progress bar. They survive a rewrap into another chapter-aware format and are dropped, silently, by one that has nowhere to put them. If chapters matter, that is worth checking before you pick the output format rather than after.
Does using MOV require a patent licence?

Not for you. The codecs involved are covered by patent pools, and the licensing is settled by the people who ship decoders — the phone, the browser, the operating system — long before a file reaches you. It is why the format is everywhere in hardware and why royalty-free alternatives exist at all, and it changes nothing about converting a file you already have.
Can I just rename the extension instead of converting MOV?

Almost never, and it is worth understanding why: the extension is a label, while the bytes inside are structured for one specific format. Renaming produces a file whose name promises something its contents do not deliver, and whatever opens it either refuses the file or misreads it. The one narrow exception is two formats that are genuinely the same container under different names — and even then a proper rewrap is safer than a rename.
