What is a TIFF file?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a flexible image format supporting assorted compression methods.

TIFF handles CMYK, 16-bit depth, embedded ICC profiles and multi-page documents, which is exactly what print and archival workflows require.

Live type is a property of the working file, and every delivery format stores finished pixels, so a typo spotted after export can only be fixed by going back to the original and exporting again. That is the reason to keep the layered file as the master and to treat each flattened copy as disposable output rather than as the document.
